Construction on Potters Mills Gap project will continue through mid-November

Commuters should be aware of potential traffic delays, detours

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is alerting area drivers to potential delays next week on its Route 322/Potters Mills Gap project. Up-to-date information can be found on the PMG Project page.

Through Nov. 16, drivers may encounter the following:

— Monday through Thursday, Nov. 12-15, westbound traffic will be detoured off Route 322 at Potters Mills and be directed to use Route 144 north to Old Fort and Route 45 west to Route 322 west at Boalsburg. This detour will be in place during daylight hours only, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. This movement will minimize traffic stops and keep traffic flowing as the contractor performs roadway widening work.

— To assist with detoured traffic, flaggers will be in the roadway at the intersection of Route 144 and Route 45 in Old Fort.

— Eastbound traffic will remain on Route 322.

— About a mile east of the Route 322/144 intersection, westbound traffic will be redirected to the crossover once again beginning in the afternoon hours Saturday, Nov. 10.

— Work will also continue off the roadway and drivers should be alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting Route 322 through the Potters Mills area.

— As work continues through November, drivers could encounter traffic stops of less than 10 minutes on Nov. 19 and 20 and Nov. 27- 30.

— Drivers should also be aware that the westbound detour using Routes 144 and 45 may return temporarily in November so that roadway widening work can take place.

This is the third and final phase of a construction project dating back to 2015. Phase One of the project constructed the new bridge at Sand Mountain Road. Phase Two created the new local interchange on Route 322 at Sand Mountain Road. The goal of Phase Three is to reconstruct Route 322 from Sand Mountain Road to Potters Mills — including a new Route 322/Route 144 intersection. The completed project will alleviate congestion and allow traffic to move more safely and efficiently from the Centre/Mifflin County line to Potters Mills.

PennDOT encourages drivers to "Know before they go" and to check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles before traveling. 511PA is free, available 24 hours a day, and provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 860 traffic cameras.
