Penn State Harrisburg Police Department to host S.A.F.E. self-defense training

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Penn State Harrisburg’s police department will host a Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange (S.A.F.E.) self-defense training course from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 in the campus Gallery Lounge (Olmsted W107).

The central message of the S.A.F.E. campaign is “If you were targeted for a violent attack, you are only guaranteed there will be one person there to defend you and that person is … you.” This message speaks to the importance of being prepared for assault situations. The National Self-Defense Institute’s Self-Defense Awareness & Familiarization Exchange (S.A.F.E.) program introduces individuals to self-defense and to information intended to reduce the risk of exposure to violence.

Somewhere in America, a woman is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes, according the U.S. Department of Justice. S.A.F.E.’s introductory crime-victim prevention program aims to educate and train individuals to prevent sexually violent crimes and to help them avoid, escape and survive assaults if they do occur. The course is taught by certified instructors on campus.

To register for the course, contact programs coordinator, Officer Richard Rocco, at rjr5500@psu.edu or call 717-948-4333. The deadline to register is Thursday, Nov. 1. The event is free of charge, and attendees should wear comfortable clothing and sneakers.
