LGBTQA Resource Center celebrates Transgender Awareness Month in November

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State and the LGBTQA Student Resource Center is celebrating Transgender Awareness Month in November with workshops, speakers, a fashion show and open houses to show continued support for the trans, nonbinary and gender diverse community at Penn State.

Brian Patchcoski, director of the LGBTQA Student Resource Center, a unit of Student Affairs, says that while the center and Penn State celebrate sexual and gender diversity in all they do, the month of November allows them to focus their efforts in educating the community on gender diversity, while also remembering those who have lost their lives courageously breaking gender binaries and norms.

The center will host and support a number of events throughout the month on campus:

  • Friday, Nov. 2:
  • LGBTQA Student Resource Center Clothing Transit Open House, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. 24 Ritenour Building
  • Wednesday, Nov. 7:
    • Faculty and Staff: Transgender and Gender Inclusion 101 Workshop, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. HUB-Robeson Center (register online)
    • Keynote Speaker: Jeffery Marsh: Genderqeueer? Demisexual? You don't need a label, 6 p.m. – HUB-Robeson Center - Flex Theater

  • Thursday, Nov. 15: LGBTQA Student Resource Center hosts the Clothing Transit Fashion Show, 6 p.m. in HUB-Robeson Center - Alumni Hall
  • Tuesday, Nov. 20: Transgender Day Remembrance Day

Patchcoski said of all the events hosted throughout the month, he encourages  the Penn State community to participate in the Transgender Remembrance Vigil. The vigil is a collaboration between student organizations, the campus and the community.

“All are welcome to join us in remembering those we have lost and who rest with the power for change they created within and beyond our community, while also reminding us of the work that continues to lie ahead,” Patchcoski said.
