Behrend soccer team earns top seed for AMCC tournament

ERIE, Pa. — With a 1-0 win over Mt. Aloysius, the women's soccer team at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, clinched the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season title.

The college's volleyball, swimming, and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Men’s soccer

Penn State Behrend 1, Mt. Aloysius 0

Penn State Behrend 10, Hilbert 0

Penn State Behrend 2, Franciscan 1

The Lions blanked Mt. Aloysius in the AMCC Game of the Week. Michael DiCola, a sophomore from Beaver, scored in the seventh minute.

Women’s soccer

Penn State Behrend 1, Mt. Aloysius 0

Penn State Behrend 8, Hilbert 0

Ashlyn Whipple, a junior from Canonsburg, scored with 3:31 remaining in the game to carry the Lions past Mt. Aloysius. She also scored against Hilbert.

Women’s volleyball

Penn State Behrend 3, Mt. Aloysius 2

Penn State Behrend 3, Pitt-Bradford 2

Kristin Reiland, a freshman from Fairview, had a team-best 15 kills against Mt. Aloysius, which had been undefeated in AMCC play. Setter Lexi Irwin, a senior from Greensburg, had 39 assists.

Men’s swimming and diving

Penn State Behrend 210, Alfred State 75

The Lions swept the top three spots in five events against Alfred State. Matt Karenbauer, a freshman from Butler, won the 200-meter butterfly, the 100-meter butterfly, and the 200-meter individual medley. He also swam on the winning 200-meter medley relay team.

Women’s swimming and diving

Alfred State 153, Penn State Behrend 139

The Lions won 10 of 16 events against Alfred State. Marcella Puglia, a freshman from Beaver Falls, won the 1,000-meter freestyle, the 500-meter freestyle, and the 200-meter butterfly. Barbie Cessar, a freshman from Slippery Rock, won the 200-meter breaststroke, the 100-meter breaststroke, and the 200-meter individual medley.

Men’s water polo

Washington and Jefferson 11, Penn State Behrend 9

Isaak Hatopp, a junior from Saline, Michigan, scored five goals. Goalie Matt Olimski, a sophomore from San Diego, made nine saves.
