UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Both chambers of the Pennsylvania General Assembly adopted separate resolutions Oct. 17 that designated Military Appreciation Week in Pennsylvania in coordination with Penn State’s Military Appreciation Week.
Through the resolutions, the state House and Senate both prescribed Oct. 27 through Nov. 11 as Military Appreciation Week in Pennsylvania. The two-week period coincides with the University’s Military Appreciation Week, which honors service members, veterans and their families.
“The Senate recognize Penn State’s history of support for our nation’s military and honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces,” the Senate resolution said.
“It is our responsibility to do everything we can to honor and support those who have served our nation,” said the House resolution.
State Sen. Guy Reschenthaler, veteran and Penn State alumnus, who represents parts of Allegheny and Washington counties, served as the prime sponsor of the Senate resolution, and state Rep. Stephen Barrar, who represents parts of Chester and Delaware counties, was the House resolution’s main sponsor.
Penn State’s Military Appreciation Week kicks off Oct. 27 with the Penn State football game against Iowa, which will celebrate 100 years of women in the U.S. armed forces, and concludes Nov. 12 — the day after Veterans Day.
More than 5,600 Penn State students have direct military ties as either an active-duty service member, a reservist, veteran or military dependent, across all of the University’s campuses, including Penn State World Campus.
Penn State has consistently been recognized as a military-friendly school for the many academic programs and support resources available to active-duty, veteran and ROTC students. In 2018, Penn State World Campus was ranked as a top online school for military and veteran students by Military Times and U.S. Veterans Magazine.
