Penn State Hazleton plans week of events for disability awareness

HAZLETON, Pa. -- Leaders from the rehabilitation and human services program and Student Success Center are coordinating a series of events to mark National Disability Awareness Month at Penn State Hazleton during the week of Oct. 15-19.

The week’s events will allow students in the RHS program a chance to serve as advocates for people with disabilities, showing their peers and others what life can be like for those with varying disabilities.

Events are as follows:

Monday, Oct. 15, beginning at 3 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 19: Poster expo

RHS 100 students will display creative and informative posters related to various aspects of disabilities.

Monday, Oct. 15, through Friday, Oct. 19: Winter coat, hat and mitten drive

The newly formed RHS Club is holding a winter apparel drive to support Brandon’s Forever Home. Donation boxes will be placed in several locations throughout campus. Any new or gently used coats, hats, scarfs, mittens and gloves in all sizes from newborn to adult will be accepted.

The mission of Brandon’s Forever Home is to raise awareness about children in foster care and their need for permanent loving homes. The organization helps provide for basic clothing needs for youth. Donations will go to children and adolescents in need of winter gear.

Monday, Oct. 15, through Friday, Oct. 19: Showcase of disabilities

Tammy Spevak, coordinator of the Student Success Center, will email information from faculty and staff spotlighting those on campus who have shared stories of disabilities.

Thursday, Oct. 18: Presentation on alopecia

Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Human Services Garrett Huck will present on alopecia, a common autoimmune skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp, face and sometimes other areas of the body. The condition impacts people of all ages and ethnic groups and affects approximately 6.8 million people in the United States. Pizza will be provided for approximately the first 30 arriving participants. The talk will be held in Room 115 of the Evelyn Graham Academic Building.
