Girl Scouts invited to spend day on local college campus to earn badges

Join college professors and student organizations at Penn State Shenango for its fourth annual Girl Scout event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 in the campus’s Great Hall located in Sharon Hall on Penn Avenue in downtown Sharon. All levels of Scouts (Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador) have two sessions to choose from, which will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. A fee of $10 per girl includes activities; the badge, patch, or Journey award earned; as well as an event participation patch.

Registration is limited and will close on Friday, Oct. 26. Visit www.gswpa.org to sign up under the Activities Calendar.

As a service project for this event, all Scouts are asked to bring a homemade card thanking a veteran for their military service and to sign it with their first name only. These will be distributed to veterans at local nursing homes by The Guardians Nest.

The following information provides specific sessions which the girls may choose to earn their badge, patch or Journey award:

Junior Girl Scouts (grades four to five):  Choose between completing hands-on activities as you earn the Flowers Badge with botanist and science faculty member Tammy d’Artenay, or a Chemistry Badge with members of the campus STEM Club and science faculty member Kathy Shaffer, or learning about communication as you earn your aMuse It’s Your Story, Tell It Journey with new faculty member Tiffany Petricini, whose research interests include interpersonal and intercultural communication.

Cadette Girl Scouts (grades six to eight):  Choose between working with faculty member Jennifer Jewell and physical therapy lab assistant Jo Ann Messett to earn their Physical Therapy badge or using the campus’s One Button Studio and Mac computers to earn the Digital Movie Maker badge with Jill Cataldi from the Lartz Memorial Library.  

Senior and Ambassadors (grades nine to 12):  Choose to work with nursing faculty members Kerry Risco, Joan Humphrey, and Amy Higgins to earn a Nursing badge or earn the new College Knowledge badge as you spend the day learning about the college search process and the financial aspects of attending college in a session lead by Brooke Doerfler from the admissions office.
