Accounting faculty member receives Young Leader Award

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants has named Michael D. Shipman, instructor in business administration/accounting at Pennsylvania College of Technology, among its 2018 Young Leader Award recipients.

Through its Young Leader Awards, the PICPA annually recognizes members under the age of 40 who demonstrate a commitment to the accounting profession through their participation in PICPA or community volunteer activities.

Shipman is a certified public accountant who holds a master of science in accounting from the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as a teaching assistant, and a bachelor of science in accounting from Ithaca College.

He is the Penn College Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site coordinator and teaches a variety of courses in financial accounting, taxation and corporate finance. He has given his time to provide an overview of the income tax filing process to participants of Thrive International Programs, a Williamsport-based nonprofit. Before joining the Penn College faculty, Shipman was a tax associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

As a Young Leader Award recipient, Shipman was featured in the fall 2018 issue of Pennsylvania CPA Journal and was honored, along with other recipients, at the PICPA Leadership Conference on Sept. 24 in Harrisburg.
