WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Members of the Pennsylvania College of Technology chapter of the Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association, along with dentist and dental hygienist volunteers, will provide free oral cancer screenings from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The event will be held in the college’s Dental Hygiene Clinic, on the second floor of the Breuder Advanced Technology & Health Sciences Center. This is a walk-in event; no appointments are necessary.
Oral cancer accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers diagnosed annually in the U.S. Everyone should receive an oral cancer screening at least once per year. This can be done during regular dental-office visits.
The event is dedicated in memory of Michael J. Brady, who was an oral cancer survivor for more than 20 years. His cancer was identified by a Penn College dental hygiene student during a routine dental examination, emphasizing the importance of oral cancer screenings for early detection.
Brady, a professor at Lock Haven University, was an avid advocate for oral cancer survivors. One of his four daughters, Bridget E. Motel, is an adjunct instructor of dental hygiene at Penn College.
