UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Institute for CyberScience, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the College of Information Sciences and Technology will host an event presented by Alessandro Fanfarillo, a senior software engineer at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
The joint ICS, CSE and IST Colloquium will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, in W375 Westgate Building. No registration is required for the seminar.
Titled “Getting ready for exascale computing: New features of the Message Passing Interface (MPI), challenges and opportunities,” the event will explore the new capabilities of the recently introduced MPI-3.1 and the upcoming MPI-4 standard, as well as the challenges faced by the implementations.
MPI, which was released in the early 1990s as a standardized way to invoke behavior on a computer, has changed dramatically through the years to keep up to date with hardware and software changes in the parallel computing world.
Fanfarillo will discuss the changes and the associated features to continually manage these updates after years of experience with parallel weather models, GPU computing, and software design/refactoring of scientific codes.
