Faculty Council meeting dates set

The Faculty Council is the public voice of the College of Education faculty and community. The council brings public attention to issues of concern, and has a consultative role to advise Dean David Monk on policy and support shared government. Monthly meetings are attended by Monk or his appointed representative and are open to the public. All 2018-2019 Faculty Council meetings will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in 273 Chambers Building. Dates for these meetings are: Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 15, Dec. 13, Jan. 17, Feb. 21, March 21 and April 18. Emergency alert systems test scheduled for Oct. 3

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission will send a test message beginning at 2:18 p.m. on Oct. 3 to all cellphone users within range of an active cell tower. The message, which will make a loud tone, will read: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed." This will be the first national test of the Wireless Emergency Alert System. Professional development information session

David Lee, professor of education (special education), will present "Grant Writing and the Institute of Education Sciences: Project SEALS" at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in 107 Rackley Building on the University Park campus. He will discuss his Institute of Education Sciences-funded Project SEALS, a professional development program to help teachers in rural schools support their students who are at-risk for school adjustment difficulties. The presentations are open to all interested students, staff and faculty and are also part of SPLED 575.

Free bike safety workshop scheduled

Penn State students, faculty and staff, as well as local community members, are encouraged to attend a free bike safety workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 117 Weston Community Center at Penn State's White Course Apartments. The workshop will teach participants the rules of the road and bike safety skills before bringing the group outside to a beginner-friendly practice course at the Brown 11 parking lot. Proposals sought for Student Engagement Expo

The Student Engagement Network is hosting the second annual Student Engagement Expo in the HUB-Robeson Center on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Individual undergraduate students or student groups participating in engagement experiences are encouraged to submit proposals that support the central theme of the event, "Find Your Why. Profiles website taken offline

The Penn State Profiles website, a database of Penn State researchers and their expertise, was taken offline on Wednesday, Sept. 12, and has been replaced with the Penn State Research Database. The new database is built on the PURE platform. To learn more about using the platform and modifying a profile, visit https://research.med.psu.edu/pure-help/.

Volunteers sought for University conduct boards

The Office of Student Conduct, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs, is currently seeking faculty and staff volunteers for the University Conduct Board and Title IX Panel. Faculty and staff interested in serving should visit http://bit.ly/2D3eXOu for more information.

Learn Life Hacks from CAPS

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is offering a series of Life Hacks with CAPS. Life Hacks with CAPS are weekly gatherings held at the Student Health Center. Enjoy lunch or dinner, and help students learn

Cafe Laura, a student-operated eatery, is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday in Mateer Building near the Nittany Parking Deck. Students taking the HM330 course, Food Production and Service Management, prepare and serve a variety of foods, including soups, homestyle meals, deli and grill options, and chopped salads. Students taking the HM430 course, Advanced Food Production and Service Management, prepare theme dinners throughout the semester at Cafe Laura as part of their senior capstone class.
