UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Television veteran Jay Crawford will present a free public lecture about launching a successful career in sports journalism Oct. 1 on the University Park campus.

Crawford, formerly of ESPN, has worked in TV sports since 1987. His presentation, “You Can Get Here From Here,” will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in 10 Sparks Building.

After starting his career in Hazard, Kentucky, Crawford advanced to larger markets, eventually working in Columbus, Ohio, and Tampa, before joining ESPN. At ESPN, Crawford served as “SportsCenter” co-anchor. He also spent nine years as host of “Cold Pizza” and its successor, “First Take.”

Most recently, Crawford was the executive in residence at his alma mater, Bowling Green University in Ohio. He also handled play-by-play duties for TV broadcasts of Cleveland Browns games during the preseason.

Crawford’s public lecture is part of a multi-day visit to Penn State as part of a visiting professional series partnership between the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters and the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications. Along with the lecture, he’ll meet with students and faculty in classes, as well as with students associated with efforts such as “Centre County Report,” the student-produced newscast, and CommRadio.
