A team of Penn State Health employees were among nearly 1,700 volunteers who lent a hand during the United Way of the Capital Region’s 26th annual Day of Caring on Sept. 7. They helped the American Red Cross with its “Sound the Alarm” event by testing and installing free smoke detectors in the Greenwood Street neighborhood of Harrisburg.
Dressed in “LIVE UNITED” T-shirts, volunteers from 79 companies worked on 104 projects for nonprofit organizations in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties, including indoor and outdoor cleanup, painting and landscaping.
Dr. Craig Hillemeier, dean, CEO and senior vice president for health affairs, is chair of the 2018 Live United campaign.
“I believe in the mission of United Way and the impact that the organization’s new work will have in our region,” Hillemeier said. “As a business leader, I know that it’s important to do all that I can to create a stronger, more vibrant future for the Capital Region. I’m proud to serve as campaign chair.”
