Brian recognized for Exceptional Moments in Teaching

College of Medicine award highlights faculty excellence

Dr. Pamela Brian, a radiologist at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, is the August winner of Penn State College of Medicine’s “Exceptional Moment in Teaching” program.

Brian is known for her unique teaching style, using objects, such as oranges, in her PowerPoint slides during her lectures to teach the class the material. Using methods like this helps cement the information in her students’ minds.

“Her lectures are great because she presents the material in a way that all students can understand,” wrote a current student on the nomination. “She’s created poems and stories about the subject and used them as a teaching tool. It may seem silly, but these are fantastic methods because I will always remember the lessons from them.”

Brian also goes into depth about CT scans with students during her office hours and walks them through her thinking process when looking at an image.

“All of my questions were welcomed, and she was always clear in her explanations. She would even quiz me afterwards to make sure I really understood the material. She is one of the best teachers I’ve had.”

The College of Medicine’s Office for a Respectful Learning Environment honors exceptional faculty members with the monthly “Exceptional Moments in Teaching” award program. College of Medicine students are invited to nominate a faculty member, resident, nurse or other educator who challenges them and provides an exceptional learning experience.
