Showcase discusses College of Earth and Mineral Sciences' strategic vision

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences’ (EMS) 2018 GEMS Showcase, “EMS Strategic Vision: An Evening with the Dean and Special Guests,” was held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, in 114 Steidle Building on Penn State's University Park campus.

The 2018 GEMS Showcase discussed the college’s strategic plan, and speakers will share key education, research and outreach activities that support the strategic plan.

Dean Lee Kump gave the welcome address and Vivian Rennie, a senior studying meteorology and atmospheric science, introduced the speakers and serve as the moderator.

Speakers included:

  • Susan Brantley, distinguished professor of geosciences and director of Penn State’s Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI), will present “Data Driven Dialogue.”
  • Xingchao Chen, assistant research professor in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, will present “Congressional Briefing on Weather Predictions.”
  • Guido Cervone, associate professor of geography and associate director of Penn State’s Institute for CyberScience, will present “Expanded Dimensionality Image Spectroscopy Via Deep Learning.”
  • Clive Randall, professor of materials science and engineering and director of Penn State’s Materials Research Institute, will present “Novel Manufacturing Methods.”
  • Denice Wardrop, research professor in the Department of Geography, interim director of the college’s Engaged Scholarship Office and director of Riparia, will present “Engaged Scholarship.”

The annual speaker series is sponsored by the Graduates of Earth and Mineral Sciences (GEMS), the alumni society for the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. The speaker series is intended to increase visibility and access to information on timely and relevant Earth and Mineral Sciences-related focus areas and topics affecting industry and public policy; encourage and educate students; and encourage collaboration across disciplines. The speaker series alternates between the GEMS Showcase, which features Penn State researchers, and the GEMS Industry Forum, which features Penn State alumni who are government and industry leaders.
