Behrend women win opening round of Herb Lauffer Memorial tournament

ERIE, Pa. — The women’s soccer team at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, defeated Baldwin Wallace for the first time since 2014, earning a spot in the final at the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament.

The Behrend men’s team also was in action last week, as were the college’s volleyball, golf, tennis, cross-country and water polo teams. Here are the highlights:

Men’s soccer

Penn State Behrend 0, SUNY Geneseo 0 (2OT)

Penn State Behrend 2, Houghton 1

The Lions won the opening match of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament with a go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute. Houghton’s final attempt — a header that entered the net at the buzzer — was ruled ineligible, as time had expired.

Women’s soccer

Otterbein 2, Penn State Behrend 0

Penn State Behrend 2, Baldwin Wallace 0

The Lions were runners-up in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament. The opening-round win was the team’s first victory over Baldwin Wallace since 2014.

Men’s cross-country

Third place at the Fischer Invitational at Westminster College

Zach Wortman, a sophomore from St. Mary’s, placed seventh in a field of 73 runners. He finished in 27:06.19.

Women’s cross-country

Third place at the Fischer Invitational at Westminster College

Savanna Carr, a sophomore from Franklin, won the women’s race, leading a field of 104 runners. She finished in 23:40.66. Riley Crissman, a junior from Bradford, finished fifth, with a time of 24:17.26.

Oswego 3, Penn State Behrend 2

Morrisville State 3, Penn State Behrend 1

Penn State Behrend 3, SUNY Poly 0

Penn State Behrend 3, Buffalo State 0                

Madison Clapper, a sophomore from Hollidaysburg, had a career-high 32 digs against Morrisville State. She added nine assists.

Men’s golf

First (of 16 teams) at the Pitt-Bradford Fall Invitational

Noah Kunst, a senior from Kittanning, won the event with a low score of 70, which was 2 under par. Jack Perfett, a sophomore from Moon Township, finished third, with a 72.

Women’s tennis

D’Youville 7, Penn State Behrend 2

Medaille 8, Penn State Behrend 1

Kirin Bean, a freshman from Erie, and Hadley Howell, a freshman from Harborcreek, won a tiebreaker at third doubles, finishing 9-8 (16-14).

Men’s water polo

Washington & Jefferson 8, Penn State Behrend 7

Gannon 11, Penn State Behrend 6

Mercyhurst 16, Penn State Behrend 9

Goalkeeper Matt Olimski, a sophomore from San Diego, made 19 saves and had two steals against Washington & Jefferson.
