UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Business, language, deep learning, networks, health and cybersecurity — these are a few of the many research areas that have benefited from advances in big data analytics, big simulations and other cyber-enabled methods. They are also the topics slated to be featured in the 2018-19 CyberScience Seminars series, hosted by the Institute for CyberScience (ICS).

Now in its second year, the ICS CyberScience Seminar Series was designed to showcase the many ways that researchers are utilizing computational methods to advance their fields and make a societal impact. Each seminar is free and open to the public.

The 2018-19 series includes:

  • “Understanding the Language-Learning Brain through Cyber-Enabled and Computational Methods,” presented by Ping Li, professor of psychology, linguistics, and information sciences and technology, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, in room 233B HUB-Robeson Center.
  • Panel discussion on cybersecurity and data ethics and legalities in research, moderated by Anne Toomey McKenna, distinguished scholar of cyber law and policy and professor in practice, Penn State’s Dickinson Law and ICS, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, in room 134 HUB-Robeson Center.
  • “Getting ready for exascale computing: new features of the Message Passing Interface (MPI), challenges and opportunities,” presented by Alessandro Fanfarillo, National Center for Atmospheric Research, from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, in W375 Westgate Building. This seminar is co-sponsored by School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Information Sciences and Technology.
  • Using HPC for Business (topic), presented by Christopher Parker, assistant professor of supply chain management, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, in room 129A HUB-Robeson Center.
  • Use of spatial network analysis in research (topic), presented by Clio Andris, assistant professor of geography, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, in room 233B HUB-Robeson Center.
  • Deep learning (topic), presented by Lee Giles, David Reese Professor of Information Sciences and Technology, from 1:30 to 3 on Thursday, March 14, 2019, in room 233B HUB-Robeson Center.
  • Health and cyberscience panel, featuring Todd Price, lecturer in information sciences and technology at Penn State Altoona; Keith Cheng, distinguished professor of pathology, Penn State College of Medicine; and Vasant Honavar, professor and Edward Frymoyer Chair of Information Sciences and Technology.
