Society for Indian Music and Arts offers intro to classical music lecture series

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — This fall, Penn State student organization Society for Indian Music and Arts will host a free, interactive lecture series "Introduction to Indian Classical Music" at University Park.

The series is designed to allow a beginner to understand the musical, cultural and historical basics of Indian Classical Music. Conducted by the scholarly musician and vocalist Arijit Mahalanabis, sessions will be held every Monday of the semester from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 131 of the HUB-Robeson center. The first session in this series will take place on Aug. 27.

Each session will include a lecture-demonstration component and a practicum component. Special sessions will include guest artists and scholars; a session dedicated to seeing and experiencing various instruments used in the music; and the fall concert series, held Oct. 19-21.
