UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — During her summer residency, Sue Uhlig, a doctoral candidate in art education at Penn State, is transforming the Borland Project Space into a research lab, workstation, studio and museum.

Informed by historical Wunderkammer and contemporary cabinets of curiosity, Uhlig’s dissertation research investigates collecting as a performative event and the ways in which collections become pedagogical entanglements of wonder and empathy. Focusing on the documentation of daily life through re-collected materials, Uhlig challenges the typical private, independent practice of collecting to reconsider it as a relational, interactive process in the public sphere.

Visitors are invited to join Uhlig during the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 22-27, for the following drop-in activities. All events will take place in 125 Borland, University Park campus.

Collecting Walks — 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 23

A collecting walk is a purposeful gathering of things through movement within a place. To participate, consider how your collecting indicates evidence, a connection to place, and/or the vibrancy of an object. What you might collect and how you might collect those things? Join Uhlig for a guided collection walk, or do your own collecting walk. Send photos, video and sound recordings to sueuhlig@gmail.com or post to Instagram and tag @bps_order_disorder or #bps_order_disorder.

Collecting Assemblage and Photographs — 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 24

Join Uhlig in creating assemblage installations from found objects, flea market finds, ephemera, rejectamenta and relics. Bring your own objects or use objects in the space. Boxes provided for individual pursuits. Use the mini-photo studio set up in Borland Project Space to document your objects and collectings.

Collecting Zines — 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 27

Assemble your own catalog from "Between Order and Disorder." Photographs of the different objects, furniture and collections will be available for you to choose from.

Collecting Reception — 5:30-6:30 p.m., Aug. 30

Join Uhlig in the making of the exhibition. Ongoing events will continue until the conclusion of the reception.

Unmaking the Collection — 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 31

At the conclusion of the exhibition, most items in "Between Order and Disorder" will be de-accessioned. A catalog of available items will be available on Aug. 27. Sign up for things you would like to have, first-come, first-served, with one item maximum per day. Any item not claimed by the reception has open availability. Those items not picked up by 2 p.m. on Aug. 31 will be donated to a thrift store so their stories will continue on.
