UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State will partner with the College of Health and Human Development and Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders to present “Let’s Dance,” a movement workshop for families. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, on the lawn of Ford Building (formerly Business Administration Building) at University Park.

The For Good Troupe will kick off the workshop with performances of musical theater show tunes. Afterward, attendees will be invited to learn basic choreography from the Broadway musical “Peter Pan” under the direction of Penn State dance faculty, School of Theatre students, and the Penn State Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Members of the Alliance of Heroic Hearts will offer support to participants.

“This is a really fun, active event for everyone to learn sequences of steps and movements, and to have the opportunity to perform what we have seen on the stage,” said Medora Ebersole, Center for the Performing Arts education and community programs manager.

People of all ages are invited to attend the one-hour workshop at the corner of Park Avenue and Allen Road. Parents/guardians are expected to provide appropriate supervision of their children during the event. Participants do not need to register in advance and should wear comfortable clothing. No dancing or singing experience is required. In the event of rain, the event will be canceled.

The For Good Troupe — launched in 2012 by Krista Wilkinson, Penn State professor of communication sciences and disorders — is a musical theater group featuring children and young adults with Down syndrome, plus musical theater students in the community who perform alongside. The troupe creates opportunities to act, sing and dance in a musical theater experience.

Alliance of Heroic Hearts, founded in 2014 as Superheroes for Kids, is a nonprofit group dedicated to empowering the “superhero” in us all. Its volunteers use their everyday powers for good to demonstrate that it’s easy to make a difference in the community.

Parking for the workshop is available at the Nittany Parking Deck.
