University mourns death of trustee emeritus, former state lawmaker Roger Madigan

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Roger Madigan, an emeritus member of the Penn State Board of Trustees and former state lawmaker, died on June 2 at the age of 88.

Madigan served as a Penn State agricultural trustee from 1979 to 2001. He earned his bachelor’s degree in dairy production from Penn State in 1951.

Madigan operated a dairy farm for 13 years before being elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He represented the 110th District from 1977 to 1984. 

In 1984, the Towanda, Pennsylvania, resident was elected to the state senate, representing the 23rd District until his retirement in 2008.

Madigan served as a member of the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s board of directors from 1991 to 2008. The college’s library, the Roger and Peggy Madigan Library, is partly named in his honor.

In 2003, the Penn State Alumni Association named Madigan a distinguished alumnus. In 1995, the University’s Department of Dairy and Animal Science, now the Department of Animal Science, presented him with its Distinguished Diary Alumnus Award.

Public visitations will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. on June 6 at the Presbyterian Church at 1030 W. Main St. in Troy, Pennsylvania. A private funeral service will be held on June 7 with interment at Bradford County Cemetery.
