Nurse aide program offered at Penn State Hazleton

HAZLETON, Pa. — Penn State Hazleton is now offering a nurse aide program, with the first class of students currently being accepted for an August start.

The program is designed for individuals seeking enrollment on the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Registry. Upon successful completion, students will have the skills necessary for the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide written (or oral) examination and skills evaluation, the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP).

The nurse aide program has 27 days of instruction for students, with the first 15 days spent on classroom education. The remaining instructional time is devoted to clinical education at two affiliate sites, Weatherwood Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center and Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The course includes a total of 128 hours, in addition to five CPR hours.

Amanda Gallagher has been hired as the program coordinator

The program was the next step in the campus’ nursing program offerings, which include courses in practical nursing and clinical medical assisting. The practical nursing program is an 18-month evening and weekend program. Since it began in 2010, the program has graduated 174 nurses and its ninth class will start their nursing education in August. The clinical medical assisting program is a four-month evening program that prepares students to assist physicians by performing functions relating to clinical aspects of a medical office.

“Interest in our practical nursing and clinical medical assisting programs has been high, and we wanted to offer an additional education option for students considering a career in nursing,” Director of Continuing Education Debra Conway said.

The cost of the nurse aide program is $950, which includes CPR and background clearances.
