Older operating systems soon unable to install Duo Mobile

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Starting on Friday, June 1, mobile devices running older operating systems (OS) such as iOS 9 or Android 5 will not be able to install Duo Mobile, the application used for Penn State’s two-factor authentication (2FA). Application stores for mobile devices and smartphones, including the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, will update the minimum OS requirements on June 1.

In addition, as of April 1, those using the mobile application on older OS will no longer receive technical support from Duo Security. The application will still run and allow Penn Staters to complete the 2FA process; however, users may experience a slower authentication process than those with an updated OS.

Please consider running the latest version of Duo Mobile on an updated OS. Updated systems will maintain a mobile device’s security and provide access to the latest features and improvements made to Duo Mobile and all other applications.

For assistance, contact the IT Service Desk at ITservicedesk@psu.edu or 814-865-4357, or visit us at 130 W. Pattee Library at University Park.

Benefits of Duo Security:

  • Protects and prevents unauthorized access into your Access Account and further protects sensitive information behind WebAccess.
  • Offers multiple options for 2FA, even if users do not have internet access, including phone callback and passcodes sent by text message. Duo Push sends push notifications to your mobile device for authentication through the Duo Mobile application.

All University faculty and staff members at every campus location must enroll in and use 2FA to log in to services and accounts protected by WebAccess. Students are encouraged, but not required, to use 2FA.

Get Duo Mobile

  • Download the Duo Mobile application on your smartphone or other mobile device from the application store.
  • Enroll your device on the 2FA Management webpage using a computer or tablet.
  • Scan the QR code on your computer’s screen to authenticate your device.

Visit the Duo Security website to learn more about finding the operating system on iPhone, Apple Watch, Android, Windows Phone or Blackberry devices.
