Workshop offers resources and inclusive strategies for international students

April 23 collaborative seminar open to all faculty and staff

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As members of the Penn State community, what role can each of us play to create bridges of intercultural connection? What can faculty, advisers and staff do to promote a campus culture of inclusion and positive recognition for international students and scholars?

These questions will be considered during a workshop titled “Building Intercultural Community in the Classroom and Beyond," offered from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 23, in Krause Learning Space, 221 Chambers Building on the University Park campus.

Participants can share ideas, learn new strategies and become familiar with a range of support resources on campus available for international students. Organized and led by Penn State faculty with extensive experience in international and intercultural education, the workshop will include:

  • Discussion of challenges faced by international students in the transition to academic and cultural life at Penn State
  • Review of research-based strategies for effective intercultural communication both in and out of the classroom
  • Presentation of campus resources that are specifically designed to support international students and scholars.

Participants will be encouraged to contribute insights, best practices and additional relevant resources. Faculty and staff from across the University are encouraged to attend, as Penn State continues to make great strides in achieving an internationally diverse community of students, scholars and faculty.
