Silvis recognized for 'Exceptional Moments in Teaching'

College of Medicine award highlights faculty excellence

HERSHEY, Pa. — Dr. Matthew Silvis, a sports medicine physician in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Penn State Health Medical Group–Palmyra, is the April winner of Penn State College of Medicine’s “Exceptional Moments in Teaching” program.

Silvis, a professor of family and community medicine and orthopaedics and rehabilitation, is also the medical director of Primary Care Sports Medicine. Silvis serves as team physician for the Hershey Bears Hockey Club, Lebanon Valley College and Hershey High School. His special interests include the care of endurance athletes, exercise and concussion.

Silvis’ students appreciate the extra time he takes to review material.

“He was great at reviewing and took time out of his week to put on a review session for us at night, which he wasn't required to do,” wrote a current student on the nomination. “He was invested in making sure we not only knew the material but understood it and how to apply it in practice.

“He made going to class exciting, interesting and informative. He told real stories about clinical cases and made everyone excited to learn about orthopedics. I definitely want to be him when I grow up,” continued the student.

Silvis previously received the College of Medicine’s Distinguished Educator Award in 2017.

The College of Medicine’s Office for a Respectful Learning Environment is honoring exceptional faculty members with the monthly “Exceptional Moments in Teaching” award program. College of Medicine students are invited to nominate a faculty member, resident, nurse or other educator who challenges them and provides an exceptional learning experience. Click here for the nomination form.

The Office for a Respectful Learning Environment fosters an educational community at the College of Medicine in which all learners and educators feel supported, challenged, valued and respected.
