Upcoming career event asks seniors 'How will you define Success After State?'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Students preparing for graduation and navigating the world of work can benefit from talking candidly with leading employers about professional skills at Success After State.

This conference-style event is for graduating seniors to get the inside scoop from alumni and industry professionals about workplace skills and "adulting." The event, featuring a series of 50-minute, come-and-go sessions, will take place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 9 in Room 131 of the HUB-Robeson Center at University Park.

Each of the sessions features an employer panel or presenter, and each session will run three times throughout the event.

Social Media in the Workplace Panel

Have a candid conversation about how (and how not) to use social media in your career. Should you follow your supervisor on Instagram? Should you really share that story about your annoying co-worker on Snapchat? How can your LinkedIn profile keep you up to speed in your industry?

The Unwritten Rules: Office Politics and Political Savviness Panel

Success is defined not only by on-the-job performance, but also by your ability to navigate a professional workplace. Learn how to build your professional brand by “managing up,” maneuvering office politics, and navigating “after hours” etiquette.

Financial Literacy Workshop

Managing your finances after graduation is complex. Gain an awareness of how to budget your paycheck successfully to cover student loan repayment, investments in retirement plans, and all of the bills that come with independence and adulthood.

While the panels and presentations are running, students can meet with Peer Career Assistants, get information from employer sponsors, and learn about their free one-year membership to the Penn State Alumni Association after graduation. Refreshments from employer sponsors will be provided.

Featured employers include: ALDI, American Red Cross, Cigna, Coal Creative, Mars Incorporated, McQuaide Blasco Attorneys at Law, OSIsoft, PPL Corporation, and Wells Fargo.

This event is organized by the Penn State Alumni Association and Career Services, a unit of Penn State Student Affairs. For students looking to identify and achieve their career goals, career counselors and Career Services programs are helpful resources.
