Center for Community and Public Safety offers 'Stop the Bleed' course

LEMONT FURNACE, Pa. — The Center for Community and Public Safety (CCPS) at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, in cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Fayette County Emergency Medical Services Council, will offer free first aid training to local law enforcement in support of the “Stop the Bleed” campaign.

“Stop the Bleed,” launched in October of 2015 by the White House, is a national campaign to connect law enforcement with education and training on tourniquet use and basic first aid for victims of severe blood loss from injuries such as gunshot wounds, mass casualty incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and other traumatic events.

Dr. Matthew D. Neal, assistant professor of surgery and attending surgeon for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, serves on the committee for the Western Pennsylvania chapter of "Stop the Bleed."

“This is a critical public health initiative in the modern era due to intentional mass injury events and the risk for life threatening injuries due to blood loss,” said Dr. Neal. “We seek to make bleeding control education as common as CPR education and to make bleeding control kits as ubiquitous as automated external defibrillators (AEDs).”

The CCPS will offer training for first-responder and self-rescue techniques. Law enforcement officers can enroll in one of three courses, free of charge. For more information, including course schedules and registration, call the CCPS Emergency Medical Services Office at 724-430-4217.
