2017-18 performance management cycle nears end for University staff

Evaluations to be completed in Workday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — For University staff employees, the current performance management cycle ends on March 31, and performance reviews are to be completed by May 31. This year’s performance appraisal process will be completed in Workday; therefore, managers and staff should begin familiarizing themselves with the end-of-year review process, including attending online training.

“The last step in the annual performance management cycle includes an important self-evaluation for staff employees and a review by their respective manager. Together, these are important steps in assessing and further developing our talented staff employees,” said Sara Oliver-Carter, senior director of talent, diversity and inclusion for Penn State Human Resources.

On March 16, staff employees will receive two notifications regarding performance management in their Workday inbox. The following steps are necessary for staff employees to complete their self-evaluations in Workday:

1. Get Additional Manager Feedback – This step is only applicable for those who wish to have a second manager (such as an employee with a dotted line reporting structure) provide feedback on their performance, which will be included on the evaluation. If no additional manager feedback is needed, a staff employee must “skip this step” in order to continue.

2. Complete Self-Evaluation – Staff employees must review and rate each goal and competency, as well as review and answer the two ethics and compliance questions. The last step before submission is providing an overall performance rating for the 2017-18 performance management cycle. After a staff employee completes these steps, only then will the respective manager have the ability to complete the review.

Please note, for the 2017-18 performance management cycle only, the self-evaluation step includes adding goals.

With the transition to Workday, staff and managers are encouraged to attend an online training that provides detailed instructions for completing the end-of-year review process. The following trainings are available via Adobe Connect:

“Workday has become a robust tool since its launch in December,” added Oliver-Carter. “We are excited to add the performance management process to Workday, as it provides a rich and easy-to-use experience for staff employees and their managers.”

An overview of the end-of-year performance review responsibilities, training registration, helpful resources and detailed timelines for completing 2017-18 performance management activities are available on the Penn State HR website.
