DuBois Veterans Club plans, seeks support for campus memorial

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Members of the Penn State DuBois Veterans Club are seeking support for the creation and installation of a memorial on campus to honor all students, past, present, and future, who serve or have served in the armed forces.

The granite, keystone-shaped stone will feature the seals of all five branches of the U.S. military, as well as an inscription memorializing student veterans of the campus. Club members plan to employ R.D. Brown Memorial of Punxsutawney to create the monument, which will stand four feet high, and three feet wide. It is to be placed in Schoch plaza, a central open space on campus.

"We were at the Harrisburg campus and they had a beautiful memorial for veterans on their campus. We brought that idea back to our campus to memorialize our veterans, past, present and future," said Veterans Club member Ken Larson, of Reynoldsville. "This shows that our campus is military friendly, and that Penn State is military friendly."

The Penn State DuBois Veterans Club is made up of individuals who serve or have completed military service, who wish to support others doing the same. Members host 5K run/walk events, collect donations for Toys for Tots, participate in Bowl for Kids' Sake, organize Veterans Day ceremonies on campus each year, and volunteer with various community organizations.

The latest fundraising effort the members have undertaken with the goal of putting the campus veterans memorial in place will require them to raise $3,600 to cover the creation and installation. Their goal is to have those funds raised by the end of this semester. This would allow time to get the memorial in place for a dedication ceremony on Veterans Day this year.
