President's Concert set for March 27 in Philadelphia's Verizon Hall

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The 12th annual President’s Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. March 27, in Verizon Hall, Philadelphia, and will feature performances by the Concert Choir, Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. 

The President’s Concert is an annual event that features Penn State student musicians performing in renowned concert venues along the East Coast.

Pre-concert reception: 
The Penn State Alumni Association and President Eric Barron will host a pre-concert reception from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in The Lounge of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Alumni and friends can enjoy hors d'oeuvres and socialize with fellow Penn Staters during this time.

Admission to both the concert and reception is $50 for Alumni Association members and students, and $65 for nonmembers. A special seating area will be reserved at the concert for pre-registered reception guests. Click here to register now.

Concert tickets for high school music students and their guests are provided free of charge by the Penn State School of Music. To reserve tickets, visit the school’s website.

President’s Concert: 
This year, the President’s Concert will include performances by Penn State's Philharmonic Orchestra, Concert Choir, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

In addition to frequent national tours, the Concert Choir has performed internationally around the globe including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Great Britain, Canada, and Australia. Conducted by Christopher Kiver, the Concert Choir will perform the following compositions on the program:

  • Exsultate by Brian Edward Galante
  • Versa est in luctum by Tomás Luis de Victoria
  • Komm Jesu, komm, BWV229 by Johann Sebastian Bach accompanied by graduate student Miguel Campos, cello
  • The Little Stream Sings by Andrew Maxfield
  • Pal-So-Seong (8 Laughing Voices) by Hyo-Won Woo

The Philharmonic Orchestra comprises 90 students from all majors who perform five to six times per year. In addition to playing at Verizon Hall, the orchestra has enjoyed performing in prestigious venues like New York City's Carnegie Hall, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall, and the Auditoiro de Zaragoza in Zaragoza, Spain. Conducted by Gerardo Edelstein, the repertoire for the evening’s Philharmonic Orchestra will include:

  • Overture from Der fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman) by Richard Wagner
  • Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34 by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

The premier wind and percussion ensemble in the School of Music at Penn State, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a highly selective 40-member ensemble. Conducted by Dennis Glocke the Symphonic Wind Ensemble will perform the following compositions:

  • Huldigungsmarsh by Richard Wagner
  • The Leaves are Falling by Warren Benson
  • The Cowboys Overture by John Williams, arranged by Jay Bocook
