WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Division of Student Affairs at Pennsylvania College of Technology has again been nationally honored for its commitment to workplace diversity, equitable staffing practices and supportive work environments.
The selection as one of 13 institutions named the 2018 Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs was announced by the American College Personnel Association and Diverse magazine. Penn College was also among the 2015 designees.
“We are honored to be recognized for a second time as a Most Promising Place to Work in Student Affairs,” said Elliott Strickland, vice president for student affairs.
“We work daily to uphold Penn College’s values as an inclusive ‘community of respect.’ This starts with a knowledgeable and diverse staff who work directly with our students to ensure their education and empower their development.”
He noted Penn College’s uniqueness on the landscape of higher education: a national leader in applied technology education in a traditional campus setting focused on student learning and enrichment.
“Our impact on students is a testament to the hard work of our talented staff,” added Strickland, a 20-year employee who began as director of student activities.
Student Affairs at Penn College encompasses a full range of living and learning services for all Penn College students, including student activities, health services, on- and off-campus housing, dining services, counseling, career development, disability services, athletics, college police, a campus bookstore, diversity and cultural life, and campus and community engagement.
“At Penn College, people make the difference,” said Hillary E. Hofstrom, associate vice president for human resources. “We recognize that each employee is different and values different things. The diverse needs of our employees and their families are always in the forefront of our benefit offerings and policy formation.”
Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs is part of a collaboration between ACPA and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. With a focus on workplace diversity, staffing practices and work environment, the research uses a web-based survey approach to examine categories such as family friendliness, salary/benefits and professional development opportunities.
Other institutions on the list (in alphabetical order) are California State University-Channel Islands, Clark University, Holy Names University, Miami University, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Saint Louis University, Shepherd University, The Ohio State University, The University of Vermont, Towson University, University of West Georgia and Virginia Tech.
The full findings will be published in the March 8 issue of Diverse magazine, and formal recognition will follow at the ACPA’s annual meeting in Houston from March 11-14.
