UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State College of the Liberal Arts inducted 123 students as Paterno Fellows and Schreyer Scholars on Jan. 24 in the Hintz Family Alumni Center. Three students were recognized for their performances in the fifth annual Collegiate Laws of Life Essay Contest, as well. The students gathered together to celebrate their achievements thus far in their academic career.
The Paterno Fellows Program is offered jointly by the College of the Liberal Arts and the Schreyer Honors College. As Paterno Fellows, Liberal Arts students must meet additional qualifications. They enrich their time at college by completing a second major or an enhanced minor, fulfilling ethics, leadership and global awareness requirements and partaking in a study abroad or internship experience.
The fellows heard from Catherine Wanner, the Barry Director of the Paterno Fellows Program, and Adison Godfrey, the alumna guest at the ceremony. Godfrey, a class of 2016 Paterno Fellow, is currently pursuing a master's of education degree in curriculum and instruction at Penn State. Alongside Godfrey, two of the winners of the Collegiate Laws of Life Essay Contest also spoke to the liberal arts students.
The Collegiate Laws of Life Essay Contest, sponsored by the Paterno Fellows Program, provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to write about cultural issues and ethical values. The winning essays will be published on http://voices.la.psu.edu/ in the coming weeks. The top three essays are as follows:
— First Place: “For Dust Thou Art” by Steven Schneible. Schneible is a first year student majoring in English and a Paterno Fellow aspirant.
— Second Place: “Restrict Speech, Restrict Thought” by Britney Forsyth. Forsyth is a first year student majoring in biomedical engineering.
— Third Place: “A Trail of Photographs” by Nakul Grover. Grover is a junior majoring in chemical engineering and english and a Paterno Fellow. Last year, Grover received third place recognition for his essay, “The Colonist, the Environment, and a Billion Dreams.”
