A new 12-bed observation unit in the Emergency Department at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center opened to patients this week.

The unit provides care or continued evaluation for adults and children who do not meet inpatient admission criteria but may need continued monitoring before being discharged.

It is part of a $29.2 million expansion and renovation project that will add approximately 24,000 square feet of patient care and support space by spring 2019.
