Timothy Lees and Catharine Carroll Lees to present masterclasses Jan. 19

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Timothy Lees, concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and a faculty member of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, will present a masterclass for Penn State violin students at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, in 122 Music Building II.

At the same time, Catharine Carroll Lees, viola professor and chair of the string department at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, will present a masterclass for Penn State viola students in 112 Music Building I.

Both masterclasses are free and open to the public. 

Timothy Lees enjoys an exciting and eclectic career as concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Since his arrival in Cincinnati as concertmaster in 1998, Lees also has been appointed as a member of the violin faculty of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he serves a dual role as teacher and private coach in preparing students in developing their orchestral audition skills. A member of the Sarasota Festival faculty since 2004, Lees also has been a faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he performed as concertmaster of both the Aspen Chamber Symphony and the Aspen Festival Orchestra.

Catharine Carroll Lees maintains an active career as recitalist, chamber musician, teacher and pedagogue. Professor of viola at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she also serves as chair of the string department, Lees is a member of the artist/faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School, where she serves as principal violist of the Aspen Chamber Symphony. Lees has been featured as soloist with the Aspen Chamber Symphony, CCM Chamber Players, Wired, and upcoming features include an appearance with CCM Philharmonia in Don Quixote. As a chamber musician she has collaborated with the world’s most prominent artists, including Gil Shaham, Jaime Laredo, Sarah Chang, Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg and Joey Swensen, as well as members of the Cleveland, American, LaSalle, Ariel Quartets, and Beaux Arts Trio.
