Special living option provides career guidance for sophomore students

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State first-year students are encouraged to consider the Sophomore Year Experience as a special living option for the 2018-19 academic year.

“Sophomore year can be overwhelming as students begin to choose majors, think about internships and have questions about career planning,” said Shams Joon, sophomore year experience program assistant. “The Sophomore Year Experience special living option helps students develop both as individuals and as a group while they work through these questions and decisions.”

Joon is a program assistant who serves as a mentor and leader for about 20 students living on the Sophomore Year Experience floor. Throughout the year, he plans academic and social events for this cohort.

These events offer both professional development and community building opportunities. For example, Joon hosted a resume review event in September leading up to Fall Career Days. Students prepared for the career fair while enjoying pizza with their floor mates.

Students benefit from guidance regarding career planning, study abroad options, involvement in student activities and more.

The Sophomore Year Experience cohort lives in Beaver Hall in the Pollock Housing Area. To request this student living option (SLO), review the SLO contract process guidelines.

The special living options are designed to create a close- knit community within university housing. Students who participate have the opportunity to participate in field trips, group dinners and other social and educational activities.

For students looking to identify and achieve their career goals, career counselors and Career Services programs are helpful resources. More information about upcoming programs and events can be found online at studentaffairs.psu.edu/career. Career Services is a unit of Penn State Student Affairs.
