Shenandoah Conservatory violist to present masterclass

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Shenandoah Conservatory faculty violist Doris Lederer will present a masterclass for Penn State viola students at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, in 112 Music Building I. Her visit to Penn State is hosted by faculty violist Timothy Deighton and the Penn State Viola Society. Admission is free.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Doris Lederer has performed with the Marlboro Music Festival and toured with Music from Marlboro. She has appeared as soloist with the Seattle Symphony, the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Albuquerque Chamber Orchestra.

Currently holding the positions of professor of viola and chamber music, and director of chamber music at Shenandoah Conservatory, Lederer also serves on the faculty of the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Blue Hill, Maine, and visiting chamber music faculty at the University of Maryland at College Park. She has also served on the faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program, the Chautauqua Institution, the International Festival at Round Top, and the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, as well as the annual Audubon Quartet's Intensive String Quartet Seminars.

Lederer has presented viola and chamber music masterclasses at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, the Yale School of Music, the Kansas City Conservatory of Music, Kneisel Hall, the Chautauqua Institution, Idyllwild Arts, and the Marrowstone Music Festival, as well as the Central Conservatory in Beijing and the Shanghai Conservatories.

As the only jury member representing the United States, Lederer was a jury member at the Eighth Banff International String Quartet Competition in Canada. She has also served as a jury member of the Coleman Chamber Music Competition. As the violist of the Audubon Quartet since 1976, she has performed throughout the world and has recorded extensively on the RCA, Telarc, and Centaur labels.
