Global Languages Week to spotlight scholarship, fellowship opportunities

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Students interested in expanding their global identities by delving into a foreign language can take advantage of a wide range of programming opportunities during Global Languages Week, Oct. 23-27.

Sponsored by Penn State’s University Fellowships Office (UFO), Global Languages Week will highlight scholarships and fellowships available to students with an interest in global affairs and a passion for foreign language study. Events are in coordination with University of Global Program’s International Educational Week.

The week kicks off Oct. 23 with a global languages fellowships overview in 106 HUB-Robeson Center from noon to 1 p.m.

The fellowships spotlighted will include:

For the duration of the week, these language opportunities will be discussed at events featuring UFO staff, alongside past scholarship and fellowship recipients.

Monday, Oct. 23

A Global Languages Overview will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 23 in 106 HUB. Caitlin Ting, interim director of the University Fellowships Office, will be presenting.

Tuesday, Oct. 24

The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships information session will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 24 in 308 Boucke. Elena Galinova, the FLAS coordinator, will be on hand to answer questions.

Wednesday, Oct. 25

The Critical Language Scholarship information session will take place from noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 8 in 112 Boucke. Janet Purdy — who participated in the CLS program in Tanzania — will share her personal experience and offer advice to prospective scholars.

Thursday, Oct. 26

Students interested in applying for the Gilman or Boren scholarships can attend an information session from 4 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 26 in 106 HUB. Speakers will include Tineka Lebrun of Penn State’s Global Programs Office and Scout Cheeks, who received an undergraduate Boren Award to Brazil.

Friday, Oct. 27

The UFO will also host walk-in hours for students as part of Global Languages Week. They will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Oct. 27 in 321 Boucke.
