UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Eduardo Navas, assistant professor of new media in the School of Visual Arts, will lead a series of workshops throughout the month of October to explore data visualization techniques and applications. The first workshop will introduce approaches to data visualization, and others will explore putting techniques into practice and present techniques being developed at the Arts and Design Research Incubator (ADRI).
Navas will also provide a dialogue from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, to share and discuss his research on remix consisting of methods and theories of data patterns of communication that are relevant across disciplines. An emphasis of his research is to examine how particular information or content is recycled, repurposed and recombined, and how this leads to new forms of creativity and innovation.
He is the author of "Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling" (Springer, 2012) and "Spate: A Navigational Theory of Networks" (INC, 2016). He is co-editor of "The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies" (Routledge, 2015), and "Keywords in Remix Studies" (forthcoming, Routledge 2017).
Navas implements methodologies of cultural analytics and digital humanities to research the crossover of art and media in culture. His production includes art and media projects, critical texts and curatorial projects. He considers moving from the macro to the micro, in other words, how to use abstract data to focus on specific instances that will reveal elements that otherwise may go unnoticed.
“Being able to move from the broad to the specific in order to evaluate shifts in meaning can be a critical element in the promotion of diversity and, consequently, lead to a fair evaluation of how cultural difference plays a pivotal role in the common good of society,” said Navas.
The workshop series complements Navas’ dialogue and provides participants with opportunities to explore the possibilities of data visualization and analytics for research and creative practice.
