MCKEESPORT, Pa. — Penn State Greater Allegheny’s Black Student Union is collecting items to send to families affected by the recent hurricanes. Specifically, they are collecting water and non-perishable food items.
Representatives from the club made their first drop-off of items to the Salvation Army branch in Greentree, Pennsylvania, on Friday, Sept. 22.
According to Residential Education Specialist Evan Williams, the Black Student Union wanted to show support in a way that could benefit those in need. They brainstormed on what items would be most needed and, as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is structured, food and water are the most important items. So they constructed a drive that started Sept. 18.
Miarei Harris, president of the Black Student Union, said, “I am so thankful that we have been able to come together as a campus and make a change to someone’s life. We have been receiving so much participation from students, staff and faculty. It truly makes me happy.”
The drive will be extended until further notice and more drop-offs will be planned as needed.
