READING, Pa. — As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Penn State Berks will host its sixth annual Latino Forum for high school students from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12. The event will begin in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium and is open to students from all Berks County high schools, as well as members of the local Latino community.

This year’s theme is “Aspire, Succeed, Celebrate.” The event will feature a panel comprised of the college’s Latino alumni and current Latino students. Panelists will discuss their personal histories including their experiences at Penn State Berks. They will also talk about what they have been doing since graduation and how Penn State Berks prepared them for the future.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in a breakout session titled “From Aspiration to Success" facilitated by Waldo Alvarado, director of equity and diversity, Reading School District. After lunch, closing remarks will be delivered by Daniel Egusquiza, founder and director of Barrio Alegria, a community transformation organization that uses the arts as a platform for community engagement. The day will conclude with a campus tour given by student Lion Ambassadors.

The mission of the Latino Forum is to empower the Latino students of Berks County to pursue higher education. The forum provides mentoring, inspiration and motivation for students as they learn that higher education is both desirable and attainable.
