Executive Insights: Barclays CEO to speak at Smeal leadership series

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Jes Staley, group chief executive officer of Barclays, will share his viewpoints on leadership and business with the Penn State Smeal College of Business on Friday, Sept. 15. His visit is part of Smeal’s Executive Insights series.

Staley will take part in a moderated discussion with Charles H. Whiteman, John and Becky Surma Dean of Smeal, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:05 p.m. in the Struthers Auditorium, Room 110 of the Business Building.

Executive Insights will be streamed on Facebook Live on Smeal’s Facebook page.

Staley’s visit comes one week after Brian T. Olsavsky, chief financial officer and senior vice president at Amazon, visited the college in the first Executive Insights session of the semester. The final session of the semester is planned for Oct. 20 and will feature Wanda Hope, chief diversity officer of Johnson & Johnson.

Staley has more than four decades of extensive experience in banking and financial services. He worked for more than 30 years at JPMorgan Chase, initially training as a commercial banker before advancing to several leadership positions, including heading the company’s global investment bank. He served as managing partner at BlueMountain Capital before joining Barclays as group chief executive in December 2015. He holds a bachelor’s in economics from Bowdoin College.

Executive Insights is designed to complement the Smeal educational experience by bringing high-profile business leaders to the college to connect with students, faculty, staff and administrators. Past guests include leaders from organizations such as Amazon, Archer Daniels Midland, BASF, Boeing, Credit Suisse, Dell, Deloitte, Dick’s Sporting Goods, EY, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Kohl’s, KPMG, Macy’s, National Retail Federation, Nestlé, Oracle, Procter & Gamble, PwC, Samsung, Siemens, Verizon, Tumi Holdings, Inc., and Urban Outfitters.
