Authorities clear scene following bomb threat; suspicious device was fake

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A bomb threat was received by University Police via a telephone call today (Aug. 22) at around 2:45 p.m. The threat was to Research West Building near the White Course (golf course) and the building was immediately evacuated of personnel. Police remained on the scene. Following floor sweeps with Penn State's bomb-sniffing K9 team, police climbed to the roof area, where they discovered a small cylinder with wires attached. A PSU Alert was sent to the campus community when the threat was deemed credible.

The Penn State-State College hazardous device team responded to investigate further. The explosive device technicians determined that the cylinder was not a viable explosive device and it was secured. An all-clear alert has been sent.
