Girls explore engineering, science at Greater Allegheny summer camp

MCKEESPORT, Pa. — Penn State Greater Allegheny is hosting "Take Flight," a weeklong, nonresidential summer camp from June 19 to 23 for girls entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The G.U.I.D.E.S. program stands for Girls Undertaking Interest in Design, Engineering, and Science. 

Through the guidance of Penn State Greater Allegheny faculty, staff and students, participants will explore different aspects of science and engineering in a fun, hands-on environment. In addition to introducing students to the exciting worlds of science and engineering, activities are designed to foster deeper thinking and leadership skills, such as goal-setting, teamwork and effective communication.

Each morning will be dedicated to learning about a science topic, like light and color, using hands-on activities. Participants will have the opportunity to meet and hear from a local female scientist or engineer. They will finish their day by using their newly acquired science and engineering skills to work on a weeklong project to be presented on the final day of camp.

Some fun activities for campers include tie-dying T-shirts, an escape room challenge, and making ice cream using liquid nitrogen as the freezing agent.  

On Friday afternoon, June 23, families will be invited to a picnic celebration and showcase of the paper hot-air balloons the students have designed and constructed throughout the week.

The program will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
