Penn State researchers recognized for supporting early careers in prevention

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Society for Prevention Research (SPR) has selected Mark Greenberg, Bennett Chair of Prevention Research and founding director of the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center, and Karen Bierman, Evan Pugh Professor of Psychology, to receive its 2017 SPR Service Award.

The SPR Service award is given to individuals who have made generous contributions to the Society that supports ongoing professional development of early career prevention researchers.

Greenberg and Bierman will receive the award along with Kenneth A. Dodge and John Coie (retired) of Duke University; John Lochman of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and Robert J. McMahon, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia.

The six researchers make up the Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group, which led the development of the FAST TRACK project — a comprehensive preventive intervention program to help children develop social skills and academic competencies in order to succeed in school and life. This ongoing study has continued for nearly 25 years and is designed to improve child competencies, parenting effectiveness, school context and school-home communications, and follows children into adulthood to assess the long-term impact of the intervention. For more information on the Fast Track Project see fasttrackproject.org.

The group has donated its royalties from all the products created for the FAST TRACK project to the SPR, which uses the donations to fund scholarships to the conference and other SPR-sponsored activities.

Awards will be presented at SPR’s 25th annual meeting on June 1 in Washington, D.C.
