Sustainable Climate Risk Management Summer School marks fifth year

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Network for Sustainable Climate Risk Management (SCRiM) is now accepting applications for its annual Summer School on Sustainable Climate Risk Management. The program runs from July 30 to Aug. 4 at Penn State.

Now in its fifth year, the summer school targets postdoctoral researchers, advanced graduate students, and early-career professionals in the decision-making and policy communities who are working on issues related to climate risk.

SCRiM holds the summer school program to foster opportunities for collaboration and to provide a solid foundation in the broad, multidisciplinary knowledge, tools and methods of the diverse fields represented within the network.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with key methods and tools including robust decision making, use of simple models, and analysis of relevant datasets. A key focus is on developing a common vocabulary to help foster enhanced cross-disciplinary communications, enabling fundamentally new science and bridging the gap between academic researchers and decision makers.

This year, the summer school is partnering with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (MARISA) program to bring a greater focus on real-world climate impacts and adaptation problems by supporting the participation of decision makers from government and the non-profit sector.

SCRiM is a National Science Foundation-funded research network centered at Penn State that links a transdisciplinary team of scholars at 19 universities and five research institutes around the world.

Its researchers seek to identify sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible, economically efficient and ethically defensible strategies for managing the risks associated with a changing climate.
