UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Faculty of all ranks and administrators at all Penn State locations are invited to participate in the biennial Schreyer Conference, set for 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Oct. 25 at The Nittany Lion Inn.
Co-sponsored by the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, the Schreyer Honors College, and the Office for General Education, the conference, titled “General Education: Inspiration for Integration,” will focus on moving forward with Penn State’s recently revised General Education program.
The new General Education program was designed to meet the learning needs and thinking skills required of students who live in a world of interconnected contexts. The requirements will apply to incoming students beginning in summer 2018.
The Schreyer Conference program will emphasize the practical aspects of General Education integration, while maintaining a focus on students. Conference topics will address the concerns of faculty, particularly faculty who will be submitting new course proposals and revised courses for recertification.
Topics of concurrent working sessions are likely to include the following, but may include additional concerns that arise between now and the conference:
- Integrative Courses: Lessons Learned
- Linked Courses: What are the Options?
- Designing Inclusive Gen Ed Courses
- Collaborating Across Domains: Teaching Outside Your Comfort Zone
- Managing the Senate Recertification Process
The conference will begin with a brief review of the program approved by the University Faculty Senate last year. To ensure that curricular design stays focused on students, conference participants will have an opportunity to hear students’ perspectives on General Education through the rebroadcast of a 2013 video created by Penn State Public Media.
General Education Faculty Fellows will initiate roundtable discussions with participants during lunch. The conference will culminate in a wrap-up and Q&A with Nick Jones, Penn State executive vice president and provost.
