UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Charlotte Fei, a junior industrial engineering student at Penn State, has been named a recipient of the 2017 Dwight D. Gardner Scholarship, presented by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE).

The $2,500 scholarship is presented annually to students enrolled in an accredited industrial engineering program within the United States and its territories, Canada, and Mexico.

“I am very honored and appreciative for receiving this scholarship, which encourages me to keep moving forward and work harder,” said Fei.

Fei is currently completing a co-op with Volvo Construction Equipment in Shippensburg, where she works as an assembly manufacturing engineering intern in the company’s industrial engineering and mechanical engineering departments. Her responsibilities include developing and updating assembly processes, assisting the engineering team on Kaizen improvement activities and driving special projects related to assembly improvements (such as waste elimination).

A Schreyer Honors College Scholar, Fei was the secretary of the IISE Penn State student chapter for 2016-17 and has been elected to the position of vice president for the 2017-18 academic year.

Prior to her co-op at Volvo, Fei served as a research assistant under Lucas Professor Andris Freivalds during the fall 2016 semester. She also completed an internship with the Bank of China in Beijing during the summer of 2016.

Additionally, she is the public-relations coordinator for the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at Penn State.

A native of Hunan, China, Fei is on track to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in December 2018.

“My key interests are in process improvement and product development,” said Fei. “I am eager to optimize manufacturing systems and develop more user-friendly products that will benefit society as a whole.”
