UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ryan Solnosky, research associate in architectural engineering at Penn State, has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 ACI Walter P. Moore, Jr. Faculty Achievement Award.
The award, which was presented on March 26 by the American Concrete Institute at its spring 2017 Concrete Convention and Exposition in Detroit, Michigan, recognizes faculty members for “excellence and innovation in the teaching of concrete design, materials, or construction” for no more than seven years. Award winners must have taught undergraduate-level courses relating to concrete structural design, concrete materials or concrete construction and have demonstrated evidence of technical competence, high character and integrity. This is the top award given by ACI to junior faculty members and is highly competitive. Both national and international faculty are considered.
As part of the award, Solnosky presented on “Active Learning Strategies for Concrete Design Education through Technology Platforms” at the spring convention.
Solnoksy has been a research associate with the Department of Architectural Engineering since receiving his doctorate in architectural engineering, with a structural emphasis, from Penn State in May 2013. He received his integrated bachelor of architectural engineering/master of architectural engineering from Penn State in 2009.
The award acknowledges Solnosky’s excellence in teaching concrete design to structural, construction and architecture students. He serves as an adviser for Penn State’s National AEI Student Competition teams. Solnosky is a member of ACI Committees 131: BIM for Concrete Structures and 118: Digital Technology. He also serves as chair of the Architectural Engineering Institute’s Building Integration Modeling committee.
The award further recognized his work in virtual technologies and engineering informatics, and for the usage of BIM and IPD in multi-disciplinary team projects. Solnosky’s other research interest areas include integrated structural design methodologies and processes, innovative methods for enhancing engineering education, and high-performance wall enclosures — all three areas look toward the future of structural engineering and how it related to the selection, configuration and design of concrete systems.
The Walter P. Moore, Jr. Faculty Achievement Award was established in 2001 to honor the late Walter P. Moore, Jr., an ACI Fellow, former ACI board member, structural engineer, and educator in Texas.
