UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Robert Mitchell, a member of the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories, will deliver a talk titled “Recent Cybersecurity Events and Future Research Directions,” about the critical research needed to mount effective defense against complex cyber attacks. The talk will occur from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on April 19 in 134 HUB-Robeson Center.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The lecture is sponsored by the Institute for CyberScience (ICS) as part of a series of talks on topics of interest to the cyberscience research community at Penn State.
Cyber attacks are becoming increasingly frequent and sophisticated as cyber criminals adopt new tactics and and platforms. In his talk, Mitchell will discuss some of the most serious cyber attacks carried out in 2016, describing the techniques used in each attack and the key defensive lessons to be learned.
Drawing from this examination of past cyber attacks, Mitchell will identify research topics which urgently need investigation if future attacks are to be thwarted. He will also propose the most effective techniques and methods for carrying out cybersecurity research.

Mitchell received his doctoral, master's and bachelor's degrees from Virginia Tech. He served as a military officer for six years. Prior to joining Sandia National Laboratories, he worked at Boeing, BAE Systems, Raytheon and Nokia. His research interests include linkography, moving target defense, computer network operations, network security, intrusion detection, and cyber-physical systems.
