UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Center for Education and Civil Rights will present "Why and How to Talk About Race with Young Children" from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, in 111 Chambers Building on the Penn State University Park campus.
Young children notice and begin to formulate their understandings of race and discrimination at very early ages. Many parents and teachers want to assist children in developing fair, just and reparative approaches towards race but are unsure of how to do this with preschool students, infants and toddlers.
Following and extending the work of Andrew Grant-Thomas of EmbraceRace, who spoke on the topic on March 8, this session will support parents and teachers in building community to engage in conversations with young children and teach equitable perspectives of race.
This talk and Q&A will feature College of Education faculty Allison Henward, assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Erica Frankenberg, associate professor of educational leadership and co-director of the Center for Education and Civil Rights, along with early childhood educators from the Penn State child care centers. The presentation is free and open to the public.
